Overview
This one hour continuing education course for architects, engineers and landscape architects is the seventh of seven programs on Green Building for Infrastructure: High Performance Infrastructure Best Practices following a required introductory module, Green Building for Infrastructure: High Performance Infrastructure Guidelines. Building on the introductory pre-requisite, these seven additional programs illustrate Best Practices and provide a template for design and implementation of Green Building concepts applicable to the Infrastructure activities of Cities and Municipalities. This course discusses the development and enforcement of a site protection plan, protection of existing and future planted areas, protection of water sources during construction, the implementation of a waste management and recycling plan and minimizing disruption during right-of-way construction.
Learning Objectives
The Participant will be able to:
1. Describe Green Building principles and practices as they apply to Infrastructure Construction Practice;
- Develop, implement, and enforce a site protection plan to minimize impact of construction activity in and adjacent to the right-of-way;
- Protect existing and future planted areas from soil compaction and disturbance, chemical pollution, damage from construction equipment, invasive species, and so on;
- Monitor and maintain vegetation protection measures;
- Undertake conscientious construction practices to protect water sources;
- Implement plans for pollution prevention, chemical source control, sedimentation and erosion control, and interim stormwater management. Monitor and maintain protection of water sources;
- Implement a construction and demolition waste management plan for infrastructure construction to reduce the amount of waste entering the waste stream and increase recovery of recyclable materials;
- Employ alternative contracting strategies and creative design and construction solutions to minimize the duration of street closures, traffic diversions and detours, noise and disruption resulting from construction work in the public right-of-way;
- Reduce diesel emissions from construction equipment through undertaking vehicle retrofits and through using cleaner alternatives to traditional diesel fuel.
