Overview
This two hour continuing education course for architects, engineers and landscape architects is the sixth of seven programs on Green Building for Infrastructure: High Performance Infrastructure Best Practices following a required introductory module, Green Building for Infrastructure: High Performance Infrastructure Guidelines. Building on the introductory pre-requisite, these seven additional programs illustrate Best Practices and provide a template for design and implementation of Green Building concepts applicable to the Infrastructure activities of Cities and Municipalities. This course covers city-wide landscape planning, ecological connectivity, absorbent landscapes, effective use of trees, water-efficient design and more.
Learning Objectives
The Participant will be able to:
1. Describe Green Building principles and practices as they apply to Landscape;
- Develop standards, specifications, zoning regulations, processes, and policies to encourage the proliferation of high-quality, attractive, and healthy landscapes;
- Seek to maintain and enhance biodiversity and ecology;
- Use a diversity of ecotypes to repair or restore existing site systems. Minimize edge conditions that degrade habitat, encourage invasive species and alter ecological communities;
- Design and construct landscapes that are capable of high rates of stormwater absorption, infiltration, and treatment;
- Use structural soils in trafficked planted areas or under pavements where planting will occur, to maximize plant health and minimize pavement damage;
- Where sufficient space exists, construct earth berms to reduce unwanted noise, absorb excess fill, and to improve aesthetics and quality of life in residential neighborhoods;
- Create continuous soil trenches or root paths to provide greater area for root growth, better access to air, moisture and nutrients;
- Establish a meadow or use native ground covers in lieu of turfgrass. Use lower maintenance turfgrass species where recreational activities warrant need for mown grass;
- Reduce water consumption and protect water quality by designing a water-efficient landscape;
- Utilize biointensive integrated pest management (BIPM) techniques to minimize the use of synthetic chemicals for control of disease, invasives and pests.
