Green Building for Infrastructure - Best Practices: Streetscape

Overview

This two hour continuing education course for architects, engineers and landscape architects is the second of seven programs on Green Building for Infrastructure: High Performance Infrastructure Best Practices following a required introductory module, Green Building for Infrastructure: High Performance Infrastructure Guidelines.  Building on the introductory pre-requisite, these seven additional programs illustrate Best Practices and provide a template for design and implementation of Green Building concepts applicable to the Infrastructure activities of Cities and Municipalities.  This course covers working with community groups to enhance and improve streetscapes for pedestrians, bicyclists and mass transit as well as security, lighting and improvements to public green spaces.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe Green Building Best Practices as they apply to Streetscape;
  2. As part of street reconstruction projects or area-wide planning initiatives, work with community groups, Business Improvement districts (BIDs), and key stakeholders to enhance and maintain streetscape;
  3. Design streetscapes that are conducive to walking and that optimally balance the needs of pedestrians, bicyclists, mass-transit users, and automobiles;
  4.  Undertake physical improvements and management measures to improve quality of life, health and safety, accessibility, connectivity, comfort, amenity and aesthetics;
  5. Improve streetscape to support bicycling and other forms of non-motorized active transportation;
  6. Make physical and operational improvements to the right-of-way to improve the efficiency, cost-effectiveness, convenience, and sustainability of surface mass transit;
  7. Increase the quality and quantity of right-of-way public spaces, green spaces, street furniture, and parks within or adjacent to the public right-of-way;
  8. Balance legitimate security objectives with good urban design practices;
  9. Use the material to develop his or her own checklists to improve existing policies and procedure.

Other courses in the Green Building for Infrastructure series include:

  1. Best Practices: Streetscape (2 hours);

Qualifies for two credit hours of Green / Sustainable Design (2 PDH; 0.2 CEU).
