Green Building for Infrastructure - Best Practices: Site Assessment

Overview

This one hour continuing education course for architects, engineers and landscape architects is the first of seven programs on Green Building for Infrastructure: High Performance Infrastructure Best Practices following a required introductory module, Green Building  for Infrastructure: High Performance Infrastructure Guidelines.  Building on the introductory pre-requisite, these seven additional programs illustrate Best Practices and provide a template for design and implementation of Green Building concepts applicable to the Infrastructure activities of Cities and Municipalities.  This course covers the assessment of the building site in order to determine opportunities for implementing High Performance best management practices (BMPs) in the planning, design and construction of Right Of Way (ROW) projects.

Learning Objectives

The Participant will be able to:

1. Describe Green Building Best Practices as they apply to Site Assessment;
2. Assess the site and determine opportunities for implementing High Performance best management practices (BMPs) in the planning, design and construction of Right Of Way projects;
3. During the preliminary design investigation, perform appropriate soil tests corresponding to BMP strategies;
4. Assess soil test results for each category of BMPs;
5. Conduct hydrologic and hydraulic analysis of the site’s existing and proposed conditions to determine stormwater management needs and high performance opportunities;
6. Survey existing vegetation and develop a plan for protecting existing plant material to preserve habitat, minimize site disturbance, and reduce capital costs for reinstallation of new plants;
7. If necessary, determine opportunities for transplanting existing planting material;
8. Eliminate invasive species to minimize long-term maintenance costs and protect preferred planting material;
9. Use the material to develop his or her own checklists to improve existing policies and procedure.

Other courses in the Green Building for Infrastructure series include:

  1. Best Practices: Site Assessment (1 hour);

Qualifies for one credit hour of Green / Sustainable Design (1 PDH; 0.1 CEU).
