Green Building With Steel - Part 1: Material Attributes, Applications and LEED Ratings

Overview

Green Building is rapidly becoming mainstream, mostly due to increasing environmental concerns, a desire to develop healthier structures, and increasing regulation from the permitting authorities.  This one-hour introductory continuing education course for architects, engineers, landscape architects and interior designers examines Green Building in relation to the use of steel as a primary structural building material, its inherently recyclable nature, and its efficiency of assembly.  This course also covers manufacturing of the material and types of building suitable for steel construction, and wraps up with information on building certification, including a summary of LEED programs.

Learning Objectives:

The Participant will be able to:

  1. Describe how Steel differs from Wood as a building material;
  2. Explain the Green attributes of Steel in construction;
  3. Discuss the manufacturing of steel framing materials;
  4. List the kinds of buildings that are suitable for steel construction;
  5. Discuss the LEED ratings applicable to steel construction.

This is the first course in the Green Building With Steel series that focuses on the application and technical aspects of Steel Design and Construction.  The series consists of:

  1. Part 1 - Material Attributes, Manufacturing, Applications and LEED Ratings (1 hour);
  2. Part 2 - Guidelines for Builders, Trades and Inspectors (2 hours);
  3. Part 3 - Light Gauge Metal Components for Framing (2 hours);
  4. Part 4 - Framing With Steel Studs (3 hours);
  5. Part 5 - Erecting an Engineered Steel House (4 hours).

Qualifies for one credit hour of Green / Sustainable Design (1 PDH; 0.1 CEU).
