Landscape Design and Planting

Introduction

This three-hour continuing education course for architects and landscape architects provides planting design guidelines for preserving and improving the quality of the visual environment, prescribes standard practices and techniques for planting and initial care of plant materials, and includes guidance for the selection and establishment of turf. The planting design guidance is generally applicable for all installations. However, each installation should develop planting plans tailored to the specific landscape project. In addition, this course describes planting techniques and methods for the successful establishment of plants. Factors which are critical in the selection of turfgrass are discussed, including site evaluation, proposed use of the site and required maintenance.

Learning Objectives:

After completing this course you will have a better understanding of landscape design and planting principles and techniques as they relate to:

  • Principles of landscape design;
  • Attributes of planting;
  • The design process and design considerations;
  • Planting seasons;
  • Quality of plants;
  • The handling and transportation of plants;
  • Soils, additives and drainage;
  • Planting operations and establishment, and;
  • The establishment of turf, including microclimatic conditions, selection, site preparation, planting operations and establishment.
